This is a story about clothes. In the universe of KILL la KILL, human evolution has been encouraged by symbiotic alien lifeforms called Life Fibers, which have for the past twenty years been working in tandem with a woman named Ragyo Kiryuin to allow for the consumption of the Earth (and all the humans on it). Ragyo's husband, horrified by the experiments she had done on their two daughters in attempts to create human-Life Fiber hybrids, fakes his death and the death of their new infant daughter, creating a new identity for himself as Dr. Isshin Matoi, and founds a Life Fiber rebellion group he called Nudist Beach.

Tsumugu Kinagase was a Nudist Beach researcher, working with Isshin Matoi, Aikuro Mikisugi, and his sister, Kinue Kinagase, on a second Godrobe, which would eventually become Ryuko Matoi's Senketsu. During the course of their research, Kinue volunteered to test the prototype Senketsu, but was consumed by the Godrobe, inciting in Tsumugu a lifelong hatred of Life Fibers. There is a gap here of several years, during which Isshin Matoi was murdered, Senketsu was successfully completed, and Aikuro Mikisugi went undercover at Honnoji Academy, run by one Satsuki Kiryuin, as a teacher - though not necessarily in that order. During this time, Tsumugu was acting as a guerrila, battling the Life Fiber-supported forces of Honnoji Academy and their transforming, superpowered Ultima Uniforms.

Ryuko Matoi, Isshin Matoi's daughter, discovered him as he was dying, and, taking up one half of his Scissor Sword, went chasing after his murderer. After arriving at Honnoji Academy, she did battle with Satsuki Kiryuin, her student council (the Four Devas) and the various Two-Star (20% Life Fiber Infused) Ultima Uniform wearing club presidents, after discovering and putting on a previous hidden Senketsu. Tsumugu, hearing of this, made his way to Honnoji Academy, intent on separating teenage girl and (in his opinion) monstrous, selfish school uniform: by force, in necessary. After blowing up like half the school and almost killing her three times, Senketsu threw himself between them, and for the first time made himself verbally clear to someone besides Ryuko, telling Tsumugu Senketsu would never allow him to hurt Ryuko.

Confused and under sudden attack by Four Devas member Nonon Jakuzure, Tsumugu grabbed Ryuko and Senketsu, and booked it, leaving her in Aikuro Mikisugi's apartment to sleep off her injuries. Then he left, presumably in order to continue his guerilla operations, until he's called back by Aikuro as a safety measure while Ryuko Matoi engages in battle against the Four Devas during the school-reorganizing Naturals Election. Ryuko's battle with Four Deva Uzu Sanagayama is interrupted by REVOCS corporation designer (and trespasser) Nui Harime, who reveals she has the other Scissor Sword. She admits to Isshin Matoi's murder and prods Ryuko into going berserk; Tsumugu attempts to stop her, but fails, and it falls to Ryuko's BFF Mako Mankanshoku to calm her. She eventually does.

After the Naturals Election, Tsumugu returns to Nudist Beach's home base, and is present when Honnoji Academy's forces finally attack and subjugate Kansai, where NB is based. But the battle with the schools of Kansai is a cover: the real plan is to destroy Nudist Beach's base. Ryuko Matoi, chasing the scattered pieces of Senketsu (cut to small parts by Nui Harime and distributed to the students of Honnoji Academy by Satsuki Kiryuin and Sewing Club President Shiro Iori), manages to recollect Senketsu and fight Satsuki (and Junketsu) to a draw, sending them packing, but not before Nonon Jakuzuru blows up most of the underground Nudist Beach base.

Ryuko demands answers of Aikuro Mikisugi, finally free of his undercover work, and he obliges, revealing what Life Fibers are - what Senketsu is. Ryuko attempts to reject using Senketsu as a weapon, but Tsumugu declares that a Godrobe without use is merely a danger, and they nearly get into a fight until Mako intervenes. Aikuro, Tsumugu and Ryuko leave for Honnoji Academy's 'Culture and Sports Festival', where REVOCS corporation president Ragyo Kiryuin will appear, in order to take her down. When Ragyo arrives, she is promptly betrayed - by Satsuki Kiryuin, who declares that 'humans do not exist to serve clothing'. She reveals that Ragyo murdered Satsuki's infant sister and had her husband Soichiro assassinated, but not before Soichiro planted the seeds of rebellion in Satsuki. In the ensuing battle, Ragyo dons Satsuki's Junketsu and uses mind control on Ryuko, controlling her like a puppet. Ryuko breaks the mind control, but Ragyo rips her heart out, revealing that it is infused with Life Fibers and, with it, Ryuko's identity: Ragyo's younger daughter, thought deceased. Aikuro and Tsumugu assist in battle against Nui Harime's clones and the student body of Honnoji Academy, also controlled like puppets by Ragyo. Satsuki detonates the school's stadium in order to give the Elite Four and the Nudist Beach members cover to escape, at the cost of her own freedom. Mako is also captured by the monstrous Life Fiber soldiers called COVERS.

One month later, the Elite Four have joined with the remains of Nudist Beach to rescue as many humans as possible from the COVERS attempting to consume all humans. Ryuko wakes from her month-long coma, only to rebuff both Senketsu and the company of humans, calling herself a monster. She is lured to Honnoji Academy, where she is mind controlled by Nui Harime and Ragyo Kiryuin and sewn into Junketsu. The members of Nudist Beach simultaneously board their last line of defense: the warship SS Naked Sun, in order to rescue Satsuki. The Elite Four manage to assist her in her escape, but they are then attacked by Ryuko, wearing Junketsu. In the ensuing battle, Satsuki dons Senketsu, and then Senketsu and Mako release Ryuko from her mind control. Ryuko defeats Nui Harime by cutting off her arms, but Nui escapes with the assistance of Ragyo's secretary Rei Hououmaru.

After Ryuko and Satsuki resolve their differences and call a truce, the Naked Sun points toward the Original Life Fiber, which has gained the ability to fly and is on its way to Honnoji Academy in order to put into motion Ragyo Kiryuin's plan to cover the Earth in Life Fibers. Faced with an army of COVERS and Ragyo herself, Tsumugu assists in rescuing Honnoji students from their imprisonment with the use of a device created by Shiro Iori. The Naked Sun is then used as a blade to assist Ryuko in cutting through the core of the Original Life Fiber. Her plans momentarily foiled, Ragyo then reveals that Nui Harime has been creating the perfect Godrobe: Shinra-Koketsu. Ryuko does battle with Ragyo personally, both on the Earth and, eventually, in space high above the planet, before Ragyo kills herself and Senketsu sacrifices himself in order to return Ryuko safely to the planet, and to her friends and family. The series closes with a single remark from Tsumugu: that he's glad he gets to wear clothes again.

Appearance: Bara | At least he's wearing clothes in this picture.
Personality:
Tsumugu Kinagase is a determined, bullheaded man in a sea of determined, bullheaded people. Even the happy-go-lucky types are stubborn to the core. What sets Tsumugu apart is how obviously and angrily he wears the betrayal that has prompted that bullheaded determination on his sleeve. His anger leads him to coming to irrational conclusions where Life Fibers are concerned, and he cannot be reasoned with on matters of allowing Godrobes to roam free. They're simply too dangerous. He isn't, however, without mercy, or doubt: presumably, if he had no other choice, he would kill Ryuko, but every time he has the opportunity, he inevitably hesitates, wavering on murdering her, and even saves both her and Senketsu from their mutual enemies. The emotional scarring from the violent loss of his sister, and the experiments that carried on after her demise, still sits prominently on him. Since that incident, he's given up everything he deems unnecessary to his personal mission, something he calls "becoming a naked Nudist". (It's silly.)

Tsumugu is up-front, no-nonsense, and blunt. He has no social graces and is as aggressive as he appears: he's totally fine getting into fights to the death with teenage girls and blowing up high schoolers with grenades. He's a capable guerrilla, smart and strong and fast, and he has the ego that comes from being talented and intelligent. He never backs down and never surrenders (even when he definitely should). He feels outclassed by the superhuman fighters who use Godrobes, and in truth, he certainly is, but that doesn't actually stop him. He has a job to do, a job he's so passionate about he's let all other concerns fade away.

He definitely isn't without any humor - but his humor is deadpan, all about calling out his friend and commander Mikisugi on his (many, many) ridiculous traits and idiosyncrasies. Unlike the other characters who go nude or in skimpy outfits in the show, he never seems to have any shame or, indeed, much of an opinion at all on all these naked people, until the finale, where he reveals he's so, so glad to be wearing clothes again. Thus his nudist approach is one of realism (Nudist Beach eschews clothing to negate the chance of Life Fibers in any of their clothes) and utility instead of exhibitionism, though his physique suggests he totally could be an exhibitionist if he wanted to. His ability to put up with Mikisugi for extended periods - and the fact that he repeatedly mentions 'a debt' to Mikisugi, implying their connection is more direct than mere coworkers - reveals he does, indeed, have a certain patience in him, despite his hatred of being ordered around or defied. He has a tendency to be dishonest about his feelings, unwilling to be pleasant with people. He is, as they say, tsundere as all get out.

Abilities: Tsumugu is a baseline normal human with no special powers, but he's very strong and a talented gunman. He typically uses sewing needle guns as a weapon, but he's also capable of laying and using grenades, smoke bombs and a sniper rifle.

Tsumugu is talented at stealth and tactics. He is entirely unaugmented but through trickery and careful planning is able to take down masses of opponents.

Capable of wearing fanny pack style waist pouches and nothing else without flashing everyone in the entire world.
